i am creating a workbook that will have data for every
day. no days are skipped. i can't figure out how to put
the date in either the header or footer so that it will
appear with the current day's information. ideas?

Assuming you mean for printing.

To place a date in header/footer.

View>Header and Footer.

Open Custom box and click on the date button. Looks like a small calendar.

no, i meant that i don't want to have to type the correct
date in each day. the date function updates, doesn't it?

When you tried Gord's suggestion, did you see what excel placed in the
header/footer.

It looked like:
&[Date]

This updates just like =today() does in a worksheet cell.

i don't want it to update. ever. i want 1 october to
remain 1 october even if it's 15 october. is that
possible?

Just type the date into the header/footer the way you want it to be seen/saved.

remain 1 october even if it's 15 october. is that
possible?
