Dates in Export Specification Inconsistent in results

I am exporting a table to fixed width txt with an export specification in
Access 2003.

My table has two dates that are date/time in the table design.

My export specification has the following:

Date Order MDY
Date Delim <blank>
Time Delim <blank>
Four Digit Years yes
Leading Zeros yes
Decimal Sym .

The sample export shows both fields correctly as mmddyyyy (which is what I
want), but the txt file that gets created has one date as mmddyyyy and the
other date as mm/dd/yy (because I am limiting this to 8 characters).

This is no formatting to these dates prior to the export, field properties
identical throughout. Looking at the raw data in the table, both fields are
in the format: mm/dd/yyyy.

Why would the two date fields be treated differently when the export sampe
is correct?

Don't know why but have a work-around. Create a query based on the table.
Use the format function to put the data the way you want it exported. Export
the query.

Note that the format function will turn the dates into a string.
