Dates in Chart Legends

Hal

I'm using dates in the horizontal legend of a column chart. On the data
source, there are only columns for the days we actually worked, i.e. there
are no columns for the dates for Sat, Sun, Holidays, etc. There are no
hidden columns in the sheet.

When I select that area for the horizontal legend and view the chart, all
dates are displayed in the legend, leaving gaps in the chart. I remember a
similar problem in Excel 2003.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

My guess is that the data on the worksheet is formatted "ddd" or "dddd" to
show days-of-the-week but the underlying data are actual dates. So try
formatting the axis labels (they are not legends but labels - legends are
the boxes that show how each data series is plotted when you have more that
one data series on a chart)
best wishes

The data is formatted to produce 11/19/2008. I changed it to three other
date formats. I still have extra dates in the labels.

Thanks.

Hi,

Sounds like the axis is plotting as time series rather than categories.
Assuming you are using xl2007, as you mention there was a similar
problem in xl2003.
Select axis and display Format dialog. Select Axis Options and set axis
type as Text.

Cheers
Andy
