Dates appear as serial - can't format

I have an excel sheet with a bug it seems

all dates are displayed as serial numbers even if the formating says
date and so on... Even when i try to change the formatting nothing
happens.

Any clues?

You're in "Formula View" mode!

<Tools> <Options> <View> tab,
And *UNSELECT*
"Formulas" under Window Options.

There's also a key combo to toggle this off and on.

<Ctrl> < ` >
which on my keyboard is the same key as < ~ >.
