date format in Excel 2003

When I enter a date in a cell (ie. 9/14), it is treated like a formula. I
have formated the cell (Format, Cells..., Date, *3/14/01) but it still comes
out as 01/0/1900. What am I doing wrong?

You have one of those Lotus 123 transition settings toggled on.

Tools|Options|Transition tab|Uncheck "Transition formula entry"

If you've never used lotus, you may want to turn off all those settings (I
have).
