Database login denied

I have a database that was written by a contractor a year ago that has become
corrupted and now we can not get logged into. It denies every known id and
password that we have used in the past. Is there any way to by pass this
login security so that we can get to the data tables to retrieve our
information.

first try opening the db while holding down the shift key.
this bypasses all start up function and just opens to the
db window. not sure if it will work for passwords.

free downloadable utility that cracks passwords. i've
never used it, just made note of the site just in case.
