I am new to db design and am in the process of reading a MS tutorial and
came across the term "data source catalog" and then a reference to WSS. Is
that catalog available to FP 2003 users hosted on a Win 2000 or above server
with the extensions, or is that only available to WSS users? Thanks.

Anything dealing with WSS, requires Windows 2003 Server.

Thanks, but can I create a "data catalog" with FP 2003 by itself, or is it
available to users of WSS only?

What Tom said.

Actually a clearer answer would be...

Requires FP2003 working against Windows 2003 Server with WSS installed and
running.

Thanks, that is clearer. (I had seen the link you supplied before but still
don't understand what MS is saying there, even after reading it again). Is
WSS for very large corporate accounts only?

Basically, yes.

No, not at all. Why would you think that?

The truth is, I really don't understand WSS or what it was designed for. I
originally thought that knowing html well, along with FP 2000, a graphics
editor and a small amount of
JavaScript knowledge, I would be able to do anything I wanted on the Web.

ASP, ASP.NET and databases have changed my thinking. To me at least, WSS is
brand new. If it's not directly aimed at the corporate world, can you please
give me an example of how it could be used for something else?

Well, for example, my company is using it as a "digital dashboard" for a
server on a small aircraft. The pilot brings his laptop aboard, and logs
into the plane's web server, and gets a WebParts page that he can customize
by adding, removing, and positioning various custom WebParts that we create.

The possibilities are limitless.
