Data or File share using ethernet and crossover cable?

Could I get some step by step help from an expert out
there?

I just received an upgraded laptop computer that is
running on Windows XP.

My old PC's that have some valuable data still stored on
them is running on Windows 98.

I recently purchased a "Crossover" cable so that I could
use the LAN connections to share data from one PC to
another.

I have in the past done this with the help of a friend
who has since moved away...needless to say, I am a little
rusty and remembering what I need to do Step by Step.

I understand that I have to set up IP Protocol's on each
PC that are unique to them. I also have to enable file
sharing...I just can't seem to get one PC to communicate
or see the other PC.

Can someone help me to do this...please act as if I know
nothing about PC's and take me through a Dummies version
of file sharing from PC to PC...

Thank you.

Hi JP,

Configuring the peer-peer network is pretty simple. You just need to run
Network Setup Wizard on both computers to get everything right.

These guides will help:

Creating a home network: [See: Install and configure the network software]

-gb%2Fhnetwork.asp

Excellent Microsoft KBs on Home Networking:
