Data file did not close

Opening Outlook 2007 running on Vista I always get the message "A data file
did not close properly the last time it was used and is now being checked for
problems".

It never finds any problems but takes an age to do it and slows everthing
down. Any ideas on what it is and how to stop it!

The message could be related to your PST file which is an Outlook data file.
If I were you, the first thing I would do is scan the PST for errors. Since
it may take several scans for all errors to be discovered and repaired, a
single scan when you open Outlook would likely not be sufficient.
Close Outlook. Use the search function, look for scanpst.exe. When you
locate it, double-click it and follow the instructions. It will ask where
your data (PST) file is. Browse to it, if you don't know where it is, then
use the search function to look for *.PST. You may see an archive.pst (even
numbered ones) but you want to scan the outlook.pst or whatever you've named
your PST file that holds your current email, etc. That's the file you wish to
scan. Scan it until it finds no more errors. Then open Outlook again to see
if that helps.
If not, try using the Detect and Repair option under the Help menu item in
Outlook. You may need your Office CD for that.
Let me know what happens.
