For some inexplicable reason, whenever I try to open IE8, a window pops up
with the message:
"Data Execution Prevention - MS Windows"
"Windows has closed this program "

Dug around and found a reference to it in the Control Panel; however, the
two choices to take
any action on DEP are greyed out.

What do I need to do to prevent DEP from being activated ?

boot.ini

/noexecute = AlwaysOff

Of course, by doing that, you're enabling the malware to tip over IE8.
Before trying that, I would do a thorough malware scan first, to make sure there
isn't something "waiting to attack".

If you need a free scanner, you can get one from Kaspersky. This
ISO9660, is a complete boot disc, that does an offline scan. And
presumably can check for things like root kits (because the root
kit cannot be active while this scanner is running).

"Iso image of Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 (237 MB)"

They will update the image at regular intervals, with fresh
definition files. So if you download the file this week, it might
not be identical to the file from a previous week.

Ok, scanned with MBAM, SAS and MS Security Essentials...nothing found.
