I have missing or damaged .dll files. How do I find out
what is missing or which ones are damaged and how do I
fix this problem? Do I just re-install XP and hope I do
not lose any files or settings that I have?

You can run System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
Click Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
In the open box, type sfc /scannow (including space) and then click OK. Note
that you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP installation CD-ROM.

I wonder if that works with a proprietary XP install/recovery cd that
comes with many systems these days.

You would have to modify the ServicePackSourcePath, etc. accordingly.

BTW, did you watch the trailer I sent? :o)
