Dail-up window inserts unknown password, how do I change it?

I have had problems in XP on a coulpe of machines where to use dial-up internet the dialog box has its own password. This password is incorrect with the password that needs to be in the window. Deleting and over writing the password allows access to the ISP. How can I delete or at least rewrite the password so I can save it as it needs to be saved
Changing it in the internet option window in internet options, it comes back after I save and close tha window and open it again

Thanks

How can you tell the password is incorrect when all you see is dots?
Windows XP truncates the visible password area to 16 dots to throw off
anyone that might try to guess what it might be. Your correct password, as
saved when last successfully connected, is safely stored and remembered.

However, if you are getting an error when trying to connect, that's another
matter.
