Cut Long Names

Because Windows had a limit of 255 characters, and if you didn't know it
already, that include the full path so its much easier to exceed the 255
than most would think. Utility allows to rename the file so when it
exceeds 255 characters included in the full path then shorten that file
name so it does not exceed 255 in total.

love that web site. . . NOT. . . ;)

It took me a while to find out that Cut Long Names is a stand alone app
(not a plug-in for the $$$ware). . . never did find a "ware" statement.

Softpedia says it's Freeware:

So you mean: 'yes, you are missing something' :)

http://www.replsoft.com/cutlongnames.html has buttons 'free
download' and 'buy now'.
Looks like shareware to me. As does the licence agreement.

But indeed, it could be argued that the licence refers to Useful
File Utilities only instead of useful file utilities (if you are
still with me :)

No need to argue. The web pages specifically state that the agreement
applies to the payware app "Useful File Utilities" (UFU):

http://www.replsoft.com/license.html

"Useful File Utilities"
"The End User License for the ReplSoft UFU"

Per Softpedia it does look as if "Cut Long Names" is *some* kind of
free. . .

FWIW - speaking from experience. . . several thousand apps worth of
experience. . .

A *lot* of sites don't mention the ware type - doing a quick search on
Google will often give you at least an inkling (free vs. $$$ware). You
may have to download, scan and use the app to get the full story. . .
and even then a gottcha or two may be lurking that you won't know about
until it jumps up and bites you (sometimes months or even years later)
or someone posts the information in ACF. . .

Susan:

Thanks for the additional info, after I saw the "Download For Free" I
had decided I didn't need that particular utility. Since most so
called "download for free sites" are just that, free download, but not
freeware in any shape or form. So after your post I went and
downloaded it from Softpedia. I'll dig into it and see if there are
any gotcha's lurking therein. Again thanks!

You're welcome. :) I had just visited the web site and checked the ware
type (doing that is *almost* an automatic reflex) when Gerard posted his
comment/question so all I had to do write the reply. ;) I'll be
interested to hear what you think of the app after you've tried it.

Cut Long Names 1.6b - my impressions
------------------------------------------------------

Only works under Windows NT/XP

No Install, simply put the executable where-ever you want it and run
it.

Does not create any registry entries of its own, nor make any changes
to the system. It is of course added to the Registy MRU's and programs
List which is normal behavior.

Basic operation.
----------------

Can only scan a partition or hard drive, cannot drill down to a single
folder.

Pre-set to scan *.xls;*.doc;*.rtf;*.txt;*.html;*.htm files, can easily
add your own extensions.

Pre-set for 150 characters length, can easily change the length to
search for.

A simply check mark allows searching system files as well.

It is fast and searches a 10G partition in seconds. it would take
somewhat longer when searching through a full hard drive of the chosen
extensions I am sure.

One can choose which files to rename and which not to from the found
file names listing.

The utility allows saving the listing of the file names (with full
paths) after renaming.

I do not like the auto rename feature when one clicks on start rename,
as one is not given a choice as to how to rename. I would recommend
testing it on a few files first.

One can use it to locate long file names, and manually rename the
files oneself. I would be a more confortable and a lot safer doing
that anyway. It would have been handy to include the ability to click
on a file name and change it to your name of preference from within
the utility but that it doesn't do this is more than likely one of the
reasons its freeware.

It does what it claims to do, doesn't have any bad side effects, and
uses very little memory (3.1m when running) or system resources.

One gets what one pays for.

Useful in checking for long files names before creating ISO's and
burning backups to CD/DVD disc's, or any other removable media for
that matter.

Usually, for some reason , and I am sure I only checked one, it
cropped a whole drive.

click-select and edit button , you can change the rename

no undo , no foldback 'now go back and do some more' once
completed you have to run the app again
the save feature could be used to undo
paths are ahrd to resolve

I couldn't move or delete renamed files without a reboot.
I have several installed filesystems, perhaps one or the other aren't
playing well together. Long paths will do that to you.

The docs are not entirely correct about paths, but close enough.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/fileio/fs/naming_a_file.asp

The problem with renamers is that often the long filenames are from
webpages and the like that depend on other files.
Truncating at depth for a reparented tree should do a lot more than
truncate filenames, otherwise it will just break the logic.
Excessively long paths will need to be shortened in the directory.
One gets what one pays for.

Useful in checking for long files names before creating ISO's and

I little inattention, maybe a glitch, but inattention is the default state
so
cannot be discounted, and it clearfelled the directory tree.
It defaults to an industrial buzzsaw, there are other tools that are a
little more subtle

It does exactly what it says and I can't fault that .. cut long names.

[ the real problem here is that after 25 years, hundreds of
billions of dollars spent on machines with memory in gigabytes
and drives reaching for terrabytes we still have to worry,
I mean WORRY, about a couple of hundred bytes ,
it is those few hundred bytes in a file system architecture
designed for floppies that breaks most backups
and causes so many admin headaches ]

Thanks Shadow. That info is a big help. FWIW Long Filename Finder is
similar and it looks like it has better features than Cut Long Names.

Just what I was looking for, searching particular directories/folders
thanks for the heads up. If Windows did its job in the first place and
warned of LFN's at their creation instead of waiting until one is in
the middle of copying/moving files to halt with the dreaded "cannot
move/copy" halfway through the task but rarely with the needed "which
file" is causing this difficulty.
