Customizing "Splash" Screen

John R

In earlier versions of Windows, you could change the
first "Windows" screen users saw by editing the file
Logo.sys that was contained in the root directory of the
C: drive. (You could also do the same for the shutdown
screens with Logos.sys and Logow.sys in the Windows
directory.) I can't seem to find those files in XP. Is
there some way to edit the "Splash" screens in XP?

Thanks.

Hi John, in XP, the boot screen in contained in the file ntoskrnl.exe in the
windows\system32 directory. I believe it is modifiable, but I don't know
how. You can download one from www.themexp.org. There are a lot to choose
from there. A word of warning about replacing the boot screen-make sure it
is for your setup, i.e. with or without SP1. If you replace a non SP1 file
with an SP1 file, you'll have yourself a doorstop until you get the right
file.
The logon screen is a file called logonui.exe in the same directory.
Replacements for this can be found on the same site.

Jason,

Thank you very much for the information. I am a tech
support person for our school district and in the past, I
have modified the splash screen to identify the school the
computer belongs to: "This computer is property of
XYZSchool" I am attempting to to do the same with XP.
Your leads will prove very useful. Thanks again.

One other option that might serve your purpose is to add a legal notice
prior to logon. This is what is done on all our government computers. You
can do this by modifying the LegalNoticeCaption and LegalNoticeText values
at the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
