is it possible to produce a total row in a pivot table that will sum
one column and and produce the average of another?

If the data field is summarized by Average, the total row should
automatically show an average. What results are you seeing in your pivot
table?

If you leave the subtotals on Automatic, they should show the same
summary function that's used in the column. So, in your example, three
columns would show Sum in the subtotals, and three would show the average.

If you use a custom subtotal, e.g. Sum, that will apply to all columns.
