Custom Show: Two Problems

G

Guest

I'm trying to reorder newly-added or modified slides to my custom shows
within one master power point, but when I select the slide to be moved and
then push the up or down arrow, the slide doesn't move. Rather, the
preceding or following slide (depending on whether the up or down arrow was
pressed) is highlighted. No reordering occurs.

In addition, when I want to remove (delete) a slide within a custom show,
rather than deleting the slide that is highlighted, the slide that is two
slides up from the one highlighted is deleted.

I'm using Power Point 2000, but when I open the file up in Power Point in
Office 2004, I have the same problems.

Any ideas? I'm in great need as this is a very important work document!

Thanks in advance.

Let's start with which version of PPT are you using? PPT 2000 runs on a PC
and PPT 2004 runs on a Mac... Determining which is causing the problem is
different on the two machines, let alone the two versions.

Next, when you say "push the up or down button", do you mean in the Custom
Show interface or on your keyboard? Does it work any better if you select
the slide and drag it up instead of trying to use the up and down buttons in
the Custom Show interface?

How big is the file? Is it possible that your file is on it's way to being
corrupted? (It might be worth turning off Fast Saves (Tools--> Options,
Save, uncheck the first box) and then re-saving the file under a new name.

I'm running it on the PC (2000), but I tried it on a Mac (2004) just to see
if it was the version of Power Point. When it gave me problems on the Mac,
too, I decided it was most likely the file--NOT the version of the software.

When I mentioned pushing the up and down arrows, I was referring to the
arrows on the Custom Shows interface. (It doesn't work to use the up and
down arrows on the keyboard.) In addition, I tried dragging the slides, but
to no avail. Something I did notice is that it functions properly with the
first 15 slides or so, but not with any slides after that.

The file is large--54 MB. I tried your suggestion re: unchecking "fast
saves" to see what would happen. Unfortunately, I still have the same
problems.

Any other ideas?

Thanks a ton!

(I know that the arrows on the keyboard don't work. I was pretty sure you
did too, but added that for completeness.)

After you turned off Fast Saves, did you re-save as a new file? It really
sounds like the file is well on its way to being corrupted. So, let's look
at what you can do to save the file...

First, open a new file and insert the slides from the old file using
Insert--> Slides from file. Unfortunately, that is going to pull in the
slides, but not the custom shows.

Now, it is time to rebuild your custom shows - the easy way. Go to Shyam's
site and grab his Shyam's Toolbox (http://skp.mvps.org/toolbox/) - Part of
this tool is a much easier way to add custom shows. There is a free trial on
the toolbox so that you can fall in love with it. If you do, please purchase
the product.

For now, see if that helps any....

Thanks for your help, Kathy.

I ended up just installing Power Point 2003 on my computer, and now it works
perfectly! My guess is that the problem was associated with the Power Point
2000 version of the software. Regardless, I'm just grateful to be using a
fully functioning Power Point software program again!

Thanks again.

That works! you will like 2003 better than 2000 anyway (my guess) - Stop
back when you need more help!
