Currency format divides by 100

Excel 2003 - in a new (or existing) worksheet, any number
I enter in any cell displays as the number, divided by
100. E.g. If I enter 100, it displays as 1; if I enter
3000, it displays as 30. Cannot find how to correct this -
any help appreciated.
