Ctrl-PgDn Problem after Ctrl-F (Search)

W

Wordleast

After performing a Search in Microsoft Office Word 2007 by
pressing Ctrl-F (Find and Replace, Find Next), pressing
Ctrl-PgDn which should advance the cursor to the beginning of
the next page instead brings up an Information Box with either
this message: "Word has finished searching the document. The
search item was not found." or this message: "Word has
reached the end of the document. Do you want to continue
searching at the beginning?" The only way to resolve this
problem seems to be to exit Word and then re-enter it. In other words,
once Ctrl-F is pressed, Ctrl-PgDn no longer advances the cursor to the
top of the next page the way it usually does (and always did before
Ctrl-F was pressed). This has been driving me crazy for a long time -
any suggestions?

This is normal behaviour and reflects the latest selected search mode ie by
Find rather than by Page. At the bottom of the right scroll bar, you will
see a double 'up arrow' and 'down arrow', between them a button. Click the
button to change the search mode.

As Graham says, the action of Ctrl+PageDn/PageUp in recent versions of Word
is Browse Next/Browse Previous, the same as using the arrows at the bottom
of the vertical scroll bar. What action is performed will depend on what
"browse object" is selected. Using Find changes the browse object to Find,
as indicated by the color of the arrows (they are blue when anything other
than Page is selected as the browse object). Click on the Select Browse
Object button between the arrows to change back to Browse by Page.

Ctrl+F after a Search

While this behaviour is "normal", it is also counter-intuitive and stupid. One more item in an unreasonably long list of reasons why MS Office is a mediocre product. Anyway... if you want a permanent fix to this (which takes less than a minute and uses the Customize feature of word) here is a link. (Follow the page down a bit...)

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Microsoft-Word-1058/Word-2003-Browse-Page-1.htm

If that page does not exist, I have duplicated the permanent fix here (it was originally contributed by Anne Troy):

Another way (permanent fix):
Tools-->Customize.
Commands tab.
Click the Keyboard button. [It's near the bottom.]
On the left, choose Edit.
Choose an item in the window on the right and hit the letter G to go down to the ones that start with G. Choose Go to next page.
Click in the "Press New shortcut key" box.
Type Ctrl+Page Down
Hit "Assign"
Close the dialog.
All done!

Fix Ctrl+Page up the same way.

I hope this helps!

Thank you, Wordleast, for posting the *exact* problem I was having, and thank you Graham and Suzanne for posting the answer. I have been wrestling this beast for literally months.

I want to add my slight improvement to the solution. Those of you who are in love with keyboard shortcuts, as I am, will appreciate this. To switch from "browse by find" (resulting from Ctrl-F to find) back to "browse by page" (which returns Ctrl-PgUp and PgDn back to their original, more useful functions), type Ctrl-Alt-Home, Enter, and voila! the little blue triangles turn black and you're back to paging up and down as you should.

Enjoy!
