CSNW cannot work

Andy

Hi All,

I am using XPe SP1. How do I get Client Service for Netware to work? When I
click the CSNW icon in control panel, I have an error of the serive has not
been started. And I couldn't manually startup the serive too. What are the
components I need to add into my image in order to make this works? Can
someone just list out all the components that may be needed for this CSNW? I
need help badly, wish you guys can help out.

Million thanks!

Andy

Andy,

You may first want to check XPe SP1 Release Notes. There is a solution to
CSNW issue (to copy component's .inf files before booting your run-time
image or running FBA).
The solution has been also posted here so you may search this NG archive for
more details.

Andy

Thanks KM for your reply. Yes I have searhed through the NG and read the
below post from you:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you experience difficulties installing and configuring Client Services
for NetWare on Windows XP Embedded images, you may need to copy.inf files
before booting your run-time image or running FBA. Microsoft recommends
copying to DIRID %17%. By default, DIRID %17% is the Windows\inf directory.
The following list shows the .inf files you can copy:
a.. Netnwcli.inf
b.. Netnwlnk.inf
c.. Netnovel.inf
d.. Netmgr.inf
e.. Netnm.inf
These .inf files are present in the Windows XP Embedded client main (X86)
repositories.

(cut from SP1 release notes)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, after adding all this inf into my image, the service still refuse
to run. I am using the extra files settings to copy in these inf into %17%,
and I do see these inf in %17% in my XPe image. So what could go wrong?

Regards,
Andy

Hi again,

When I start the service manually in services, I will get "Could not start
the Client Service for Netware service on Local Computer. Error 2: The
system cannot find the file specified." The Event Viewer shows event 7023,
"The description for Event ID (7023) in Source (Service Control Manager)
cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer.
You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE = flag to retrieve this description;
see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the
event: Client Service for Netware, %%2."

Any idea what files am I missing?

Andy

When has
not CSNW?

K

KM

Andy,

Yes, you were right. Your image seems to be missing some components required
for CSNW.
I am really sorry but I don't have a good solution for you beside the one
I've already posted and these standard hints:
Resolve all the component dependencies.
Check your Fbalog.txt and setupapi.log for any related errors.
Check Eventlog to see what service related errors appear there when you
attempt to start the service.
Have Regmon and Filemon monitoring tools running when you attempt to
start the service manually. If you see a failed request for any resource
that would be a start point for your investigation.

As I don't have an image with CSNW up and running now to list all the
components included I can't be of much help to you.

The message is not very informative.
Copy drvmain.sdb to %SystemRoot%\AppPatch directory on your runtime from XPe
Repositary (or even from XP Pro machine). That should fix some of Event log
messages and you will be able to see more info there.

KM, just one more question. Once I included the inf, is the CSNW supposed to
install itself? I can see the CSNW icon in control panel, however, it can
not be found in network properties. I have to manually install the client.
Is this normal?

After installing the client and manually starting the service, I get the
error:"Could not start the client service for netware service on local
computer. Error 1058: Ther service cannot be started, either because it is
disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."

I have done filemon and regmon. I dont see any failire event in filemon.
However in regmon, I do see some buffer overflow and not found status. I
have never use both tools before, so is the overflow and not found status
normal?

Thanks again,

Andy,

CSNW is a component you included in your image so yes, it should install
itself during FBA.

Regarding Error 1058... I assumed your logged in to Administrator account
and the service was not disabled, right?
"NOT FOUND" status is what you should be looking for.. Any specific registry
keys (values) with the status? If it is a subkey under CLSID key, you are
probably missing a COM object registration. Check the same keys on XP Pro
with CSNW installed to find out what's dll is missing or not registered.

Another good trick is to run Regmon (FileMon) on XP Pro with CSNW installed
while you start the pre-stopped service. You should see all the reg.keys
that got accessed by the component and may try to compare it to the XPe test
regmon log to see what's missing.

Just as a good test.. Try the CSNW component on big XPe image
(XPProEmulation.zip on www.xpefiles.com, Development Utilities/Main folder)
to see if it works on your target or there is a bug in component. Though,
this test may take a time. The same here, you may run Regmon to get the
accessed reg.key log to compare to your XPe build test log.

have never use both tools before, so is the overflow and not found status
normal?

Thanks again,
Andy

Andy,

Yes, you were right. Your image seems to be missing some components
required
for CSNW.
I am really sorry but I don't have a good solution for you beside
the
one
I've already posted and these standard hints:
Resolve all the component dependencies.
Check your Fbalog.txt and setupapi.log for any related errors.
Check Eventlog to see what service related errors appear there when
you
attempt to start the service.
Have Regmon and Filemon monitoring tools running when you
attempt
to
start the service manually. If you see a failed request for any resource
that would be a start point for your investigation.

As I don't have an image with CSNW up and running now to list all the
components included I can't be of much help to you.
KM

Thanks KM for your reply. Yes I have searhed through the NG and
read
the
below post from you:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you experience difficulties installing and configuring Client
Services
for NetWare on Windows XP Embedded images, you may need to copy.inf
files
before booting your run-time image or running FBA. Microsoft recommends
copying to DIRID %17%. By default, DIRID %17% is the Windows\inf
directory.
The following list shows the .inf files you can copy:
a.. Netnwcli.inf
b.. Netnwlnk.inf
c.. Netnovel.inf
d.. Netmgr.inf
e.. Netnm.inf
These .inf files are present in the Windows XP Embedded client main
(X86)
repositories.

(cut from SP1 release notes)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
However, after adding all this inf into my image, the service still
refuse
to run. I am using the extra files settings to copy in these inf into
%17%,
and I do see these inf in %17% in my XPe image. So what could go wrong?

Andy,

You may first want to check XPe SP1 Release Notes. There is a solution
to
CSNW issue (to copy component's .inf files before booting your
run-time
image or running FBA).
The solution has been also posted here so you may search this NG
archive
for
more details.

Hi All,

I am using XPe SP1. How do I get Client Service for Netware to work?
When
I
click the CSNW icon in control panel, I have an error of the serive
has
not
been started. And I couldn't manually startup the serive too. What
are
the
components I need to add into my image in order to make this works?
Can
someone just list out all the components that may be needed
for
this
CSNW?
I

Hi KM,

I am still not too sure what files I am missing. I downloaded your
XPProEmulation and tested CSNW on it, I got the same error. So I guess this
is a XPe bug, right? I hope SP2 can solve this problem :p .

Andy,

At least now you know it is not a missing component problem.
It still can be a problem of default settings of some components, though. Or
a XPe bug.
I think if MS jumps in here and let you know whether CSNW ever worked on any
XPe image, that would help you to work on the issue.
At least CSNW is mentioned in the XPe Release Notes and that should mean
someone at MS has tested the component.

Sorry, can not be of much help here.

Appreciate a lot for your effort in helping me KM. Thank you very much.

As for this CSNW problem, will anyone from MS able to provide some
information whether MS has tested this or made this works before? This will
be good for me as if I know this has been done before, there's a reason for
me to continue resolving this problem.

Thank you.
