Crtl q and Crtl spacebar

I seem to recall that used remove all the font and paragraph formatting. Is
still the case in Word 2003

Yes. With the default shortcut assignments, Ctrl+q removes direct paragraph
formatting, and Ctrl+spacebar removes direct character formatting (direct =
applied directly rather than by a style). This is true in Word 2003 and
2007.
