first of all i have to excuse my bad english but i'm a german policeofficer and the days, i had my last english-lesson are far far in the past :-)

so i'll do my best:

i have two xp-home- computers linked with a crosslinkcable.

the network worked for weeks very well, the first printed my documents on the printer of the second und gaming was possible without any problems.

after having a hardwareproblem with the cable, the second pc was not much longer able to find the first one.

on the first i'm still able to see the other in the workgroup, but i can't open it in any way.

so i read a bit in the internet...

i changed the fitted IP-adress and the subnetmask of the first to
IP 192.169.0.1
subnetmask 255.255.255.0

and the second to
IP 192.169.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
but there was't any change of status!

i even changed the file HOSTS in c:\windows and added the IP-adresses of the two pc... same thing, nothin' works!

pinging the second by the first pc is getting abborted by timeout and in the other direction it's the same.

so i recovered all the settings to the old status and recovered pc one (on the second the recoveryoption was turned off) to about four weeks in the past...

the result was, that my system was so weired, i couldn't even found my games but that was not the great problem...

i don't have any further ideas of what i can do now.

can anybody help me?

maybe it's a problem with the hardware but the systeminformations tell me, that everything's allright..

thank's in front of all

Gajus,

Please describe in a bit of detail what was the hardware problem with the cable,
and what you did to resolve the problem.

From each computer:
1) Ping itself by ip address.
2) Ping 127.0.0.1.
And report result of all 4 tests.

Cheers,
Chuck
