Cross Referencing a linked object

Hello,

I have linked a chart from excel into word, and have given the chart a
caption. Is it possible to cross-reference this caption, (the Label and
number only)??

Yes, have you tried the following?
Insert, Reference, Cross-Reference (2003), select the type of reference you
have used, ie Figure or even a new one you have created, then select the
caption from the list for this chart. Then change the "Insert Reference to:"
list to "only label and number", then Insert button.
Lo and behold a cross-reference appears where you cursor is.
From you question and the terms you have used it seems you know this
already, what is the problem?

Indeed, the problem is that when i insert the cross reference, it also
re-inserts the chart.
