cross reference table captions

using Windows 2003 - I am inserting cross references to TABLES in a sentence
such as "See Table 13, Summary of Capabilities below for more detail" where
"Table 13, Summary of Capabilities" is the caption of the table.

In about 2/3 of these cases in my document Word inserted a Carriage Return
(i.e., "enter") after the table caption in the sentence which not only breaks
the sentence in the middle, forces it on to two lines, but causes all
following lines to shift down a line and at the end of the page the last line
is forced to the next page.

Anyone know why? I have many examples of this, plus examples where it
doesn't happen. Also, when I correct the bad examples Word re-inserts the
Carriage Return!

by the way, this same problem does NOT happen when I do the same for
inserting cross references to FIGURES - only to TABLES

Something has happened to the hidden bookmark that Word uses for
cross-references. Place the insertion point in the caption label of a
bookmarked paragraph. Then click Insert | Bookmark. Click the "Hidden
bookmarks" option, and, for "Sort by," click "Location" if "Name" is selected
(and vice versa). Word highlights the name of the applied hidden bookmark.
Click the Go To button, and see what gets selected. You'll probably find that
the bookmark has "expanded" to include excessive text (and other content).
Usually, this happens when you press Enter before a bookmarked paragraph
instead of pressing Enter at the end of the previous paragraph.

You can redefine an existing hidden bookmark by selecting the label and the
number (similar to what I suggested in the previous paragraph). Then, in the
Bookmark dialog box, find the bookmark name (as described above), and click
Add.
