I am currently using a cross cable to connect my laptop
(win 2k, using FAT32) to my home pc(win xp, using NTFS)
for file transfer. My home pc is able to find my laptop
and access and download files from it but my laptop is
unable to do the same. It cannot even find my home pc.

I intend to upgrade my home networking to include a hub. I
am quite worried that this problem might persist. Do I
have to enable netbios over TCP/IP for both machines?

Also is there anyway I can use a RJ45 connection for
direct cable connection with Win2k. It does not seem to
give me this option.

If you have turned on the XP firewall, turn it off. If you have installed a
third-party firewall on either PC you will need to disable or possibly even
uninstall it for further testing. Do this before you invest in more
hardware.

No, Direct Cable Connection won't work over a network. It's intended for
use on computers that are not part of a network, to substitute for a
higher-speed network connection.
