crittical stop sound during shut down

Hi, please can you help?

I have a couple of problems with windows xp home edition (sp2):

1. whilst shutting down the pc i sometimes hear the crittical stop sound, no
error message appears and then it shuts down. I have checked my event viewer
and found the following:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 26/11/2004
Time: 07:56:40
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: MARKBALCHIN
Description:
Windows saved user MARKBALCHIN\Mark Balchin registry while an application or
service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the
user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is
no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

I have checked the support centre and found something about a "user profile
hive cleanup service" at

i am not a pc expert, but is this the right download to fix my pronblem -
because it was stating to do the following before the download, but have no
idea what to do:?

Hi Bert,

Thanks for the reply and the link - so this is normal then?

The only thing that worries me is that it has only happend since sp2, but i
have reformatted my pc twice recently, both times putting on sp2 - its only
starting to do it now, whereas on the first reformat it didnt do it (it never
happend when i first got the pc either)? I am pretty sure i havent loaded any
additional software on since.....also is the sound that it plays a normal
part of this?

As I see it you have two choices, ignore the error, or
install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service. If you
install it I would suggest creating a restore point.

Thanks for the reply and the link - so this is normal
then?

The only thing that worries me is that it has only
happend since sp2, but i have reformatted my pc twice
recently, both times putting on sp2 - its only starting
to do it now, whereas on the first reformat it didnt do
it (it never happend when i first got the pc either)? I
am pretty sure i havent loaded any additional software on
since.....also is the sound that it plays a normal part
of this?

I have a couple of problems with windows xp home edition
(sp2):

1. whilst shutting down the pc i sometimes hear the
crittical stop sound, no error message appears and then
it shuts down. I have checked my event viewer and found
the following:

Hi Bert,

It seems that way.....anyway

I have noticed this whilst shutting down:

No crittical stop noise - logging off screen then shutting down screen.

Crittical stop noise - logging off screen then saving settings screen then
shutting down screen.

These massages apear on the light blue windows shutting down screen, so its
only happening when trying to save settings?
