Critical updates with HP computer and XP

Hello anyone,

Help! I just bought a HP Compaq Presario Desktop that
came with Windows XP. The HP help desk tells me NOT to
do the Windows Critical Updates with this computer. They
tell me doing these Windows Critical updates slows the
computer down and causes some programs to stop
responding. Why would a repatable company like HP make a
computer having update issues with Microsoft Critial
updates? I had another person at HP tell how how to
access these updates but didn't mention that I should not
be doing them. I did them when I used Windows 98 but my
computer was an IMB think pad. The help desk tells me XP
is differentand not to do them. I thought it was
important to do Microsoft Critical updates to keep your
computer safe. Does anyone know if there is a problem
doing the updates with a HP computer and Windows XP?

A confused new computer person.

It is extremely important to stay up-to-date on released
service, and it is rather painful and error-prone to do
this without use of Windows Update as a non-corporate
user.
Personally, I would try to verify the recommendation you
are receiving, and if indeed that is the company's current
position then I would return the machine - no sale.

If a machine maker wishes to be considered reputable
they certainly should not be making such recommendations,
let alone requirements if you want to make sure some
application they apparently providing will not break.
