But accoding to documents on excel if the file is saved
without error messages it renames the temp file with xls
why do I still see the xls and tmp files.

The file naming style that excel uses when it saves a workbook is 8 characters
(mixture of letters and numbers). It doesn't have an extension.

Do your files match this style? Or do your files have an extension of .tmp?

There have been a few posts describing this (but I don't recall a solution).
But my guess is that it was something else creating that .tmp file--any chance
your antivirus can be turned off and you could test a bit?

Just a guess--you have to keep your AV up to date or it's not worth having.
Maybe one of the updates changed the behavior of the .tmp files (the AV software
misbehaving????).

My thinking that is that it's not excel that's doing this. I've never seen xl
behave this way.

I'd delete the .tmp files, turn off the AV (just temporarily) to see if the .tmp
files come back.

If they don't, then turn the AV back on and see what happens.
