Creating styles - character

I am creating a character style and notice the option called 'Style based on'
and wondered what exactly is '(underlying properties)' - an option in the
drop down?

Please explain, many thanks

Katie, those are the underlying character properties of the paragraph
style, wherever that character style is applied. Let's say that you
define a character style called "REDSCAP" that you want to be red and
small-caps, and you base it on underlying properties. If you then use
REDSCAP within a paragraph whose style calls for its text to be bold,
then the text that is assigned REDSCAP will be red and small-caps from
the character style, and bold from the underlying paragraph. But if
you use REDSCAP within a paragraph whose style calls for its text to
be italic and green, then the text that is assigned REDSCAP will be
red (overriding green)and small-caps from the character style, and
italic from the underlying paragraph.

Hope this helps. Try it out and see how it works.
