creating parameter query in beta 2

When trying to enter @parameterVariable in a query via the smart tag on top
of a grid view I find that vb complains of a syntax error or times out. I am
trying to follow the "Data Search" example in the beta 2 samples. Does anyone
know if you have to declare the variable first or is code supposed to be
generated automatically. The whole thing is very swish but just one problem
....it doesn't seem to work.
 
I forgot to say I'm using ACCESS - sneaky feeling that may be the prob- so
can someone advise the syntax for ACCESS type db's? Thanks
