is there a way to get rid of the blue line that surrounds the cells when you
use lists?
 
The Data->Lists... menu has an option to hide the border of INACTIVE lists

Did you click outside of the List? The border is only removed when the
cursor is outside of the list.
 
Yes, that's the way it behaves.
When the list is inactive, i.e. you are not within it, the borders are
hidden.
I am not aware of any method of suppressing borders whilst it is active.
