It's not my imagination...but some time ago, before I
purchased a new computer (Sony Vaio) and reinstalled my
old computer (Compaq Presario) I was able to print a PDF
instead of printing to a printer. It wasn't software I
installed...unless unknown to me it piggy-backed on
another software. But does anyone know -- aside from
purchasing Acrobat, how I can Print or save a document as
a PDF? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Your old computer likely had a print driver to "print" (create) PDF
files. This would have come from software that you purchased (Adobe
Acrobat or a 3rd party product).

Microsoft XP, nor Office, provides capability to create PDFs.

OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org) does include PDF making capability. I
head also that WordPerfect does also (but I don't know for sure).

You can buy Adobe Acrobat to make PDF's, or you can use other products
available for purchase or free. My favourite is Ghostscript available
for free.

Download Adobe Reader

Adobe® Acrobat® 6.0 Standard software enables business
professionals to easily convert any electronic or paper document-
even a Web site-to a reliable Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF)
file for exchange and review with colleagues and customers.

Sean,

Generally speaking, the free version of Acrobat limits
the user to viewing and printing PDF documents. In order
to be able to manipulate and create PDF's, you would need
to have installed a complete version of Acrobat, which
includes the "Distiller," at some time.

The Adobe Reader can be downloaded for free, and perhaps that is what you
had on your old computer. It can be used to read and print PDF files, but
you need purchased software (from Adobe or elsewhere) to create PDF files.

Sean,
You're not imagining it. I also had that ability on a Win98 box. I think
it was installed with Word 6 or Office 97, or maybe one of the Adobe
PhotoDeluxe versions.

As others have pointed out, there are many alternatives available, from free
to nearly as costly as Acrobat. Quality of output will vary, so you need to
have a good idea of what your needs are before choosing a particular
product.
