Creating a Discussion Web (FP2003)

D

Dianah

I just set out to create my first discussion page in FP2003. Right at the
start, I was faced with a decision on how to name the folder. It explained
that the underscore_ will force a the files for the page (or whatever) to be
hidden. What are the benefits of that or should I give the folder a name
that doesn't start with the underscore. I'm not sure how to ask this
question. If someone knows the pros and cons or whys and wherefore's, it
would be great. I cancelled the process for now. Thanks in advance.

Thanks in Advance. Diana

Stefan,

It doesn't have to be a subweb though, does it? I've never done a discussion page so I'm just askin' fer me own curiousity.

I do have a related question though... I created a _includes folder for my included pages, then it seems that FP also created _includes in the _private folder, did I do something wrong? It works fine...just curious again.

A discussion web doesn't need to be a subweb, however in the long term you would wish that you had
made it a subweb. By using a subweb, you can then easily archive the discussion web and create a new
one, you be sure that when publishing from your local to your remote, the content will never be
overwritten unless you actual select to include subwebs.

Do you have a counter inserted into one of the pages in the _includes folder, if so then FP will
create the counter file in the _includes folder under _private folder.

The DW doesn't have to be a subweb, but then anytime you publish to the root you will probably clobber the DW new posts (FP won't
recognize the new posts and delete them)

FP will create a folder (and files) for every file you create in the _private folder so it can store the META info about the
files/folder there
- leave em alone

Stefan/Thomas...

Thanks! Got it. I have no need for discussion web (I generally use a link to a forum for that) but I like to learn new stuff.

No my counter is not in an include....but I won't touch nuttin' that FP creates (I've learned that lesson ...:)

Tnx.

R.

Stefan,
From what you posted, it sounds like I should let it put
the _ in front of the file folder name and leave it
alone.

Thomas,
When you refer to a subweb (excuse my ignorance), do you
mean that I need to create a separate website (different
address) to house the forum. I can't say that I'm clear
on the concept. That would mean that (as it's setup with
my ISP) that I'd have to create another account with them,
to post the discussion, if it has to be another site.
Alternatively, should I be interpreting it as just another
html page without the same structure. Alternative 3 - do
you mean to create another file folder within the same
website and put the page there. Sorry if I sound
confused ... it's a reflection of the truth (lol).

Thanks for all your posts. Useful information. I'll get
there ... it's all coming together. I'm happy with the
site, considering I've learned it all quite recently.
Still lots to learn, but that's a good thing. Diana

When you select the Discussion Web, you have the option to give a location. In that box type in you
current web location and a name for the subweb.

Ex.

If you are working with a disk-based web at:

C:\My Documents\My Webs\Webname\

you would enter:

C:\My Documents\My Webs\WebName\SubWebName

If you are working with a server based web at:

http://myserver

then you would enter

http://myserver/SubWebName

Thanks for the link -- I will certainly look into this option. Sometimes I've found the FP extensions to be more trouble than their worth
