Creating a callout easily

I'm trying to create a callout in Word. I was successful in creating it,
but it was rather painful. I ended up taking a section and making three
columns in it. Then I created horizontal lines to set the text apart. I
see this style of writing in magazines all the time. Is there an easier way
of doing this that I'm not getting?

What I think you're referring to is a "pull quote," not a callout (which is
a sort of label with a pointer to something in a graphic). As others have
suggested, a text box or frame is what you need for this purpose.
