Creating a bootable disk

I need to create a CD that is bootable for WinXP Pro. I need to copy files
from a laptop hard drive to another drive as I cannot boot Windows and have
tried everything to repair it to no avail. I just need to copy data off the
hard drive before I reformat and reinstall. Is it possible to create a CD
that I can boot from and copy files to a USB device? Any and all
information, suggestions or solutions are appreciated. I do have Norton
Ghost but can't get it to recognize the USB hard drive so I can copy to it.

Try tapping the F8 key on start up,open xp in safe mode with networking,
enter as self,then one could run the file transfer wizard to save all data.

An easy way to retrieve Windows files is to boot with Knoppix, a Linux
distro on a live cd. You will need a computer with two cd drives, one
of which is a cd/dvd-rw OR a usb thumb drive with enough capacity to
hold your data. To get Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast
Internet connection and third-party burning software. Download the
Knoppix .iso from www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd. Then
boot with it and it will be able to see the Windows files. If you are
using the usb thumb drive, right-click on its icon (on the Desktop) to
get its properties and uncheck the box that says "Read Only". Then
click on it to open it. Note that the default mouse action in the
window manager used by Knoppix (KDE) is a single click to open instead
of the traditional MS Windows' double-click. Otherwise, use the K3b
burning program to burn the files to cd/dvd-r's.

Here is another very simple and very quick way: Buy a USB case
for your 2.5" hard disk (they cost less than $20.00!), install the
laptop disk in it, then connect the case to your desktop PC.
Problem solved!

After getting this little issue out of the way, consider backing
up your data files regularly (e.g. weekly). Always treat your
laptop as if it might be stolen tomorrow!
