create hyperlink between two word documents

I have created hyperlinks within one word document before in w98. Now I'm in
Wxp and trying to create a hyperlink from one word document to another, and
it doesn't seem to work. I know on microsofts help page it describes how you
create a hyperlink between two different office applications and within one
word document, but I'can't see any reason why they would have precluded me
from creating it between two word documents, so this must just not be
explained.
For answers please keep in mind my level of understanding computers is
rather basic
