I'd like to create a short-cut N have it placed on the desktop. The short-cut
will open a new Word document based on an existing template of my own.

Anyone knows how to specify this short-cut (I assume it is with the Winword
command giving it certain command options)?

Make it easy. Just open Windows Explorer, navigate to your template, right
click the template and choose 'SendTo > Desktop as Shortcut'

Just right click and drag your template to the desktop from Windows
Explorer. Release and at the prompt select the create shortcut option.
