You can write a CD with the CD writing Wizard of Windows XP. If you
want to backup to a CD, you need third-party software since "Windows
Backup Does Not Back Up to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R Devices"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315255).
Norton Ghost will make a compressed copy of your HD and
can burn it to CD's or DVD's , They can be used to return
your system to that state and if you make a rescue disc
it will load Ghost into DOS incase your OS crashes for
good.
