CRC Error

When I install a game or any program for that matter 90%
of the time I get an error message similar to:
CRC Error The file C:\whatever does not match the data in
the setup .cab file

This happens wheather it is off of a CD or a program/game
that has been downloaded.

Hi Dopey,

It sounds as if your antivirus software is interfering with the
installation and corrupting the files. Try scanning the files
first, and then disable the antivirus before you install them.

Hi,

Is it the exact same problem though?
In Dopey's situation, he has this problem both when installing
from CD and when installing from downloaded games.

Hi Dopey,

Normally I would say that your CD ROM drive is dirty
or needs maintenance, however if even your downloaded
files give you the same error, it could also be your hard
drive. Clean the CD ROM drive using a cleaning kit first
and then...

Let's try some basic troubleshooting. If the problem still persists
please post back and we'll try some more steps. Good luck! :)

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

4. Go to the Windows Update site for everything under Critical and

I have been researching this issue myself, and have seen several different suggestions for solutions. I have the problem myself as well. It distinctly seems to happen when very large files are being extracted (I have been trying to install Battlefield 1942: Vietnam). I have yet to try some of the fixes, but I am leaning toward it either being an issue with memory (the only difference on my computer between the last successful install of XP and now is that I now have 1GB [both sticks are the exact same] of RAM instead of 512MB) or with the Windows Installer (that's where it starts to get tricky). I'm going to throw my hat into the mix for this one
