I have looked through the last 15 days of messages and
tried to execute all of the suggestions that appeared
applicable to the problem, but to no avail.

I am experiencing the following problem. I start Internet
Explorer and it goes immediately into "Microsoft Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience." Then it asks if I want
to send a report and restart. I have sent the report, but
no luck. When it re-starts it cycles back to the same pop-
up window. The "error signature" is:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName:
shell32.dll
ModVer: 4.72.3812.600 Offset: 00001af2
Exception Information: Code: 0xc0000005, Flags
0x00000000, Record 0x0., Address: 0x0000000066801af2

Module 1 - SHFOLDER.DLL

Things I have tried and checked, but have not worked so
far:
1) Repair (through add/remove programs)
2) Re-install IE 6 SP 1
3) Clean-Boot
4) Setting all IE options I can find to the default
5) Deleted all the cookies and temporary files.
6) Run Ad-Aware (spyware removal)
7) Run MacAfee virus check
8) Run CWShredder
9) Run Spybot

Any help would be appreciated. How can I tell what step
in the loading of IE is causing the problem?

Sincerely,

Harold

IE 6.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Get the latest versions.
Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

and:

SpyBot-S&D
http://security.kolla.de/

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

If still no joy the get HijackThis

Henri Leboeuf,

I had already tried that, but forgot to add it to the
list. Any other ideas?

I was thinking in terms of extracting a new shell32.dll file from your CAB
files or CD.
Or... a "dirty" (over the top) reinstall of SE.

But, first, download HijackThis from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html and post a log to the
HijackThis forum at http://forum.mvps.org
After download, move HijackThis to it's own folder. Open it, then scan. Then
save log. Copy and paste that log into the message.

Another thought... have you run SCANDISK?

Or, there are some possibilities at
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#shell32
In particular:
from a dos boot
deltree history
deltree tempor~1

OK, I have a breakthrough.

Completely by accident, I double-clicked on an HTM file on
my local disk drive and IE started correctly and went to
the page. I changed my IE shortcut to:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"
my.yahoo.com

and it starts up correctly. However, if I run IEXPLORE
without a parameter it still errors out. What is
different about how IE starts up with and without a
parameter? For example, under normal startup, does it
check for IE updates, but not if there is a parameter?
Could that be it? What else?

Yes, taking my own suggestion, I went into IE options /
Advanced and disabled checking for updates, then saved and
opened IE without a parameter --> it started without a
problem.

So what could be corrupt in the checking for updates? Is
there a set of registry entries that are related?

Next I turned update check back on and it is working
correctly. Must be something inserted a corrupted entry
into one of the update check registry variables:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\AdvancedOptions\BROWSE\IEUPDATECHECK]
"RegPath"="SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\Main"
"Text"="Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates"
"PlugUIText"="@inetcplc.dll,-4837"
"Type"="checkbox"
"CheckedValue"=dword:00000000
"UncheckedValue"=dword:00000001
"DefaultValue"=dword:00000000
"ValueName"="NoUpdateCheck"
"HKeyRoot"=dword:80000001
"HelpID"="iexplore.hlp#50503"

Thank you for all your help.
