crash on install of sp2

My son's computer showed what appeared to be a normal
update for sp2. I installed it and upon attempting to
restart the computer entered an unending loop of
attempted unsuccessful restarts. I attempted to restart
in safe mode - but as far as I can get is the screen to
choose safe mode. At that point - if I choose safe mode
it begins its cycle of failed restarts. HELP!!

Hi,

Is this a preinstalled system or a home built? If the latter, what are the
cpu and motherboard makes and chipset in use? It's been noted by some
recently (courtesy MVP Cari) that users with the Prescott cpu's and
i865/i875 chipsets are having this problem. Current workaround is to disable
L1/L2 caching in the BIOS, then regain safe mode and uninstall the SP2
update.

Remove SP2 following the information in this article:

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer

The tip looks great. The computer is an emachine and the
only disc I have is a restore CD...would you try it?

Recover your computer to a bootable state and remove Windows XP SP2
To recover your computer to a bootable state and remove Windows XP SP2,
follow these steps:
1.. Start your computer by using the Windows XP Recovery Console or by
using the Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE), depending
on your situation. To start your computer by using the Recovery Console,
follow these steps:
1.. Insert the original release version of the Microsoft Windows XP CD
in your computer's CD drive or DVD drive, and then restart your computer.

Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD drive or DVD
drive. For more information about how to do this, see your computer's
documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.
2.. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears, press a
key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
3.. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen is displayed, press R to start
the Recovery Console.
4.. When you are prompted, type the number that corresponds to the
installation of Windows that you want to access from the Recovery Console,
and then press ENTER. For example, if you have one installation of Windows
on your computer, type 1, and then press ENTER.
5.. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password, and then
press ENTER.
2.. At the command prompt in Recovery Console, type the following lines.
Press ENTER after each line.
cd $NtServicePackUninstall$\Spuninst
batch spuninst.txt
exit

3.. Remove the Windows XP CD from your computer's CD drive or DVD drive,
and then restart your computer.
4.. Run the Windows XP SP2 Removal Wizard to remove Windows XP SP2. To do
this:
1.. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2.. At the command prompt, type the following lines. Press ENTER after
each line.
cd %Windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\Spuninst
spuninst.exe

3.. Follow the instructions to remove Windows XP SP2.

Rick some of the web sites for 865/875 flat out say that
the Prescott is not compatible with their boards.
For example Gigabyte 865PE will support Prescott
however MSI will not. Go figure.

There are a couple of Gigabyte boards that say they do support the Prescott
on an i865 chipset:

http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/CPUSupportList/CPUSupportList_GA-8PENXP (Rev 2.0).htm

But do they work with SP2 - I have no idea? Right now I'd be happy to find
ANY motherboard that will support the Prescott and SP2.

Current KNOWN boards that will not:

Albatron PX865 PE Pro

Shuttle SB61G2

Jetway i875P

Soyo P4I865P

Aopen AX4SG Max

Asus P4P800-E deluxe

Abit IS7-V

Foxconn 865A01-G-6EKRS

Obviously there are more, these are folks who have either emailed me
personally or posted details in their posting here. I have not come across
anyone yet who say they have SP2 correctly installed with an i865/i875 and a
Prescott CPU.

Find me a motherboard which does and I'll buy it. My Albatron came with a
huge sticker on the front that says "Prescott Ready" and it works
beautifully with XP Pro with SP1. But it's a definite no-go with SP2.

The above is a professional HW list with annotation of rev and BIOS.

Stop this silly unprofessional HW list. Any HW expert knows that the BIOS
version and the mobo revision level and the mfg date should always be
included in such a list. To make some vague statement that the BIOSs are
all the latest is simply incompetent.

In addition there needs to be some clear statement about what the list
represents. There needs to be a statement about any resolutions.

What's been posted here so far is simply meaningless.

What about an MSI with the latest BIOS. That forum post said that works.

Shuttle SB61G2

I can verify that fuer this Shuttle System "SB61G2 V3" the BIOS
version FB61S30H from 06/14/2004 works fine with XP SP2! The older
release FB61S30E works NOT!
