Please can someone tell me what this is as it seems to
slow my computer down
The screen has started to 'flash'and then goes to the
screen background with no programs displayed then returns
to normal

It's the percentage of your CPU that isn't doing anything. "idle" So your
problem is elsewhere.

The system idle is not your problem. You want that to be
at 97-98% it is the percent of your cpu not doing
anything. The higher the better. Try checking your display
settings or perhaps updating your display drivers. Hope

That sounds like Windows Explorer crashing and then restarting
automatically.

Note the time when it happens then use use the "Event Viewer" admin program
to look in the Application and System Event logs. The log usually contains
numerous warnings and notes but see if there is an event marked "Error"
jaround the time you wrote down. If there are several Errors then you need
to work out which was the first one around the time you noted. Double click
on the error and it will open another window with some more technical info.
There is a button on the right hand side to copy this info to the clipboard
and you can then paste it into a new posting here.
