CPU Usage spikes

I updated my OS from Win98 to WinXp Pro. The computer randomly shuts down and
boots up without any warning (no blue screen!). Sometimes, the whole computer
just freezes. CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing when this happens. I have no clue why
this happens.

I have done the following:
======================
I have scanned for viruses (SYMANTEC), spyware (SPYBOT), etc.- nothing
found.
I have the most recent bios and most updated drivers possible from
Gateway's site for my hardware.

I have noticed that whenever I open or close a program, the CPU Usage spikes
to almost 100%! I have 512MB of RAM in the machine.

I believe that it is a hardware problem. Any help/suggestions you can give
me would be most appreciated.

Many thanks.

The following should cause a blue screen versus an automatic reboot, assuming
the OS is failing.
Right click My Computer and select Properties then Advanced then in the
Startup and Recovery section click settings. Under the system failure section
uncheck "Automatically Restart" OK out of Properties.

If the suggestions of others are of no help, my past experience has pointed
to a power supply problem. I replaced the power supply, and the problem
vanished. Not saying that's your problem, but it's something to keep in
mind when other options fail.
