CPU Upgrade Question

I'm thinking of upgrading an AMD 1600+ processor with a AMD Sempron
2800. I've never just replaced the CPU in a system. I've always just
upgraded the mother board and CPU, but this MB is only a year old and
will handle the newer CPU.

My question is: Just changing the CPU won't affect the operating
system in any way will it? I can't see how it should, but I just
wanted to know what I was in for.

The system seems to be working OK. It's not getting the lock-ups and
BSOD that it was frequently getting before.

The only problem I've had is with Norton Anti-Virus and the file
CCapp.exe. Norton needed to be deleted from the system, using a
routine from Symantec and then re-installed in a certain manor. The
file CCApp.exe keeps the system from shutting down. I went in through
msconfig and turned it off in the startup and every thing works fine.

Any opinions?

Thanks Geezer

Ghost the drive before you start. Then no matter what happens all you have
to do is place the imaged drive back. Otherwise I would say there would be
no problem anyway that I know of. I ghosted by drive and now it is the only
thing left that is the same from the MOBO to G-Card to the case, etc.

No it will not.
There were some very limited issues with Win98 and faster
Athlons which meant it was prudent to have the OS patched
(as is normal for WIndows patching) but Win2K, XP, not a
problem.

I can't see how it should, but I just
wanted to know what I was in for.

Main issues are things like the stability at a higher
(166MHz/DDR333) bus speed. Board presumably supports it as
you mentioned above but also memory (PC2700 or higher), else
you'd need reduce memory speed or timings to keep it stable.
WIth a memory speed change (including one if/when caused by
a CPU swap) it is prudent to run memest86+ for several hours
before booting the OS.

The only problem I've had is with Norton Anti-Virus and the file

Faster CPU means a little more heat, just make sure the temp
is acceptible before running the system very long- I
usually, immediately go into the bios menu and check the
health screen for the CPU temp report after
installing/reinstalling a heatsink.
