CPU PROCESS question from an amateur

I am working on a Toshiba 1800 laptop running Windows XP.
My computer is constantly running slowly despite all my
attempts to resolve issues.
Having sorted out all other bugs, the only thing I can now
find to report is that when I go into my Windows Task
Manager and look at Processes, I see that my CPU Usage is
constantly on 100% (is that normal?).
The svchost.exe SYSTEM file seems to be on between 54 - 70
CPU while all the other process files show as between 0 -
2 CPU.
When I do 'end process' on this file, my computer shuts
down.
Of course, I don't know what the svchost.exe SYSTEM file
does, but it seems to me that it takes an inordinate
amount of CPU to run.
Could someone please let me know if any of this makes any

This won't fix your problem, just give you info on what svchost.exe does. I
found this by doing a search on google.

Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that are run from
dynamic-link libraries (DLLs).

I would run a virus scanner that also looks for trojan horse's, and download
ad-aware and have it look for spyware (that can bog your system down). That
would be a place to start anyway.

For future reference, you would be surprised at the answers you can get about
MS Software by simple going to their website, www.microsoft.com, and entering
the item you want to find out about in the Search Box at the upper left.
Googling the newsgroups with your problem is another good way to get answers.
Most of your questions have already been asked and the Google Search Engine can
often find the pertinent posts for you.

Don't close svchost.exe. It is used to run programs, and it is normal to see
several listings of it. Have you done a scan with a up to date antivirus
program? Also defrag and run disk cleanup.
