cpu overheat experience

just want to share my experience, new comp (P4 1mb HT) arrived on wkend.
was trying this smartfan function (came with motherboard) and set the cpu
temp at 45c.
was stupid enough to think it would just work without checking the temp
frequently.
machine just shut down and overheating came to mind.
so i stuck my finger in the cpu heatsink and burnt my fingertip.. man it
felt like a hot pan, after a few hrs and i still got a burning feeling..
never thought a cpu can get that hot without smoking up.. P4 is great
stuff.. wonder what would happen if it was AMD

anyway. i turn that function off for now. hehe

If it were an AMD, it would've been running cooler to start with,
then shut down eventually, too, providing the motherboard is less
than 2-3 years old, at which point the overheat shutdown feature
for AMD CPUs was implemented by everyone. Only with heatsink
removed would there be any problem for the AMD CPU, but it's the
same for a P4, they aren't immune to running without a heatsink
either.

After changing important hardware parameters, ALWAYS monitor the
response to confirm it's working correctly.

At 75°C CPU core diode temp a loud beeping would have come from my case, at
80°C the machine would have switched off. *If* I was stupid enough to let it
get that hot in the first place. I am running an Athlon Tbred B 1800+ at
2.1Ghz, currently running at 32°C core temp on air.

Intel's thermal shut-down isn't 100% foolproof, depending on the mass of the
HS there can still be damage done to the CPU. I wouldn't want your CPU now,
there could be permanent damage done to it. I'd be testing it thoroughly
with Prime95 for at least 12 hours to ensure it's still functioning properly
(at this stage at least) and looking to replace it soon with one that
someone hasn't been careless enough to temperature-stress.

would be heating less IMHO ...
