CPU FAN - How complicated can this get?

M

maradcliff

I picked up a new (used) CPU for my computer, in a "junk box" at a
local appliance recycler, for almost nothing. I plugged it in,
changed the BIOS settings and it works great. That was an easy
upgrade that doubled my computers speed. But no CPU cooling fan came
with it. Temporarily I took the fan off my old cpu and just got it
sitting next to the cpu because it wont mount to the new one. Of
course I got to keep the computer sitting on it's side to keep the fan
next ot the cpu.

Anyhow, I am just trying to find a stock fan to match the cpu, but
after spending the last 3 hours on the web, all I have gotten was
frustrated. Over 50% of the google hits take me to these assenine
sites that are nothing but lists of other sites and most of them go
nowhere. Then I ended up seeing house ventilation, window fans, and
other crap. And then too, I ended up on ebay a good 20 or more times.
(I will not use ebay). Of the few sites that actually did sell cpu
fans, not one of them listed the cpu model numbers they fit. I got to
see fans that light up in a "cool neon" (WHY the F*** would anything
need that?) And super power fans, and fan adaptors, and a whole list
of them by voltage (I know I need 12VDC). But still no matching chart
to find the one that fits my CPU. So, hours later I am nowhere ahead,
just much more frustrated.

This CPU has a rather odd heatsink setup, and only has a few clips to
hold on the fan, which MUST match the cpu because there is no other
way to mount it on this thing.

Can anyone direct me to a site that is actually helpful and will
locate the actual stock fan to match my cpu?
I live in a rural area and there are no computer stores closer than 60
miles. I'd rather get it online, but it must fit.

The CPU is an Intel, Pentium III 700mhz. The number is a SL3XM.
(coppercore).

Can anyone please help. (A working used fan will do).

Thanks

Mark

To get any help with your problem i think people will have to see the mother
board so if you can tell us what mother board you are using would help us

The OP should contact the manufacturers of coolers to make sure their
products are compatible with his actual setup.

This Startech cooler might work. It looks like an SECC2 type.

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50077046

As long as you can find someone who carries Startech stuff, you
may be able to find something closer to home. The prices on the
Startech web site, may be worse than other places. I find
their stuff is more expensive than comparable products, for
what you are getting.

http://www.startech.com/Product/ItemDetail.aspx?productid=FANP2SECC

Now, I don't know if the device would come with thermal pads
already on the bottom of it or not. If you click the "Accessories"
link on the Startech web page above, you'll notice they sell
several thermal paste products. You would use something like that,
if the heatsink happened not to have thermal interface material
already on it. (If you find pads on the bottom of the aluminum,
check to see if there is a plastic film that must be peeled off.
If the product is secured in retail plastic, such that the pads
cannot touch anything, the pads may not have any protective
film over them - don't try to peel something that doesn't
need to be peeled.)

An alternative material, would be some Ceramique.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835100009

Do you have all the mechanical bits, to secure the module properly ?
It helps if the SECC2 cartridge is properly secured, as that
takes the stress off the motherboard connector pins.

Those kind of sites are the *worst*! I'm surprised that nobody has come up
with a filter for them yet.

The Intel PIII SL3XM is a boxed CPU in the SECC-2 format. About
the only place to get a proper fan for it would be Intel, itself,
here:

http://www.shop-intel.com/shop/category.asp?category_id=116&iid=referrer+wtb_replacement_dpheat&

The Fan/Heatsink for the Pentium-III in SECC2 package should fit.

If a thermal pad is not present or dried out, then remove (and
also clean same off the CPU heatslug), and apply a thin coat of
Arctic Silver 5.

why dont you use the hs&f you were using before upgrade?
fans dont match to cpus, they match to heatsinks.
3rdly I've never yet seen a heatsink I couldnt attach a
non-designed-for-it fan to. On occasion adaption is needed if you want
to use whatever youve got in stock, but I've never failed to do it yet.
Between woodscrews, steel wire and plastic brackets, its hard to fail.

I suggest showing us a clear pic of it all. I cant think of any reason
you'd need to buy anything, unless the fan is near dead.

Yep, thats the one !!!!
I sure wish they would show the heat sink side on those pics. The
black side looks the same on all of them. I am not an ebay buyer, but
I might see if I can ask that guy if he has a fan to sell.
But, yes, that is the CPU.

I'm starting to wonder if I'd be better off just gluing some screws to
the heat sink so I can mount a plain fan to it. JB Weld will glue
anything and tolerates high heat. I have used it on engines and even
exhaust pipes.

To get any help with your problem i think people will have to see the mother
board so if you can tell us what mother board you are using would help us
to help you

I'n not sure why the MB matters (aside from things getting in the
way), but the MB is: (copied from website where I got the manual)

M748LMRT MAINBOARD

SiS620/5595 chipset.
Supports Pentium II/III and Celeron processors running at BUS speeds
of 66/100MHz
Supports up to 768 MB or SDRAM using three 168-pin DIMMs.

Thanks

That site looks like they have a good selection.
Now which fan I need is another issue.
They dont specify anything for an Intel P III.
Maybe I will email them and see what they say.
Thanks

Jon

I really wish someone WOULD come up with a filter for that crap.
I wish Google would remove them too.
Apparently these sites have taken every word in the dictionary and
created a web link to all of them. These sites all end up being spam
of some sort or other.

There is an actual word used to describe them, but I cant recall what
it is. Personally I know quite a few four letter words that describe
them pertty well.....

It's too bad people abuse the internet so much, an even worse that the
reputable search engines link to this shit.

Thats pretty much what I'm thinking right now.
The fins are like a thin aluminum bent into fins, Not the molded
solid fins I am used to. I know on the solid find I can run screws
between them, but not on this one. But JB Weld works wonders.
My old fan is fine. Then I will need to fabricate a spacer so the fan
blades dont touch the fins.

Yep, this is the one I need, Item # 741314 (on that page)
I called Intel on the phone to confirm it.

I dont understand why I need to apply that Artic Silver 5. I am not
changing the heatsink, just adding a fan. I'm not sure why the
heatsink is included with the fan.

$17 for that sucker and that dont include the shipping (their checkout
page is not loading). I think I'll rig up one of the standard fans.

I usually use some thick washers for that, no need to fab anything.
