First, I know very little about working on a computer. So please try to keep
it very simple. I have a Gateway computer 500Se (2002) with a I believe it is
a 1.8 Pentium 4. I want to replace the heatsink fan (makes noise now and
then) but have not found 1 the same size 60mmx60mmx25mm. So, the fine folks a
Comp usa sell me a new heatsink with fan and tell me that all I need to do is
remove the old heatsink/fan and simply put the new one on. Well, that sounded
good until I get home (400 mile round trip) undo the retention clips and pull
the old heatsink out. I almost died when the processor came out with it, I
understand there is supposed to be a grease on it to help transfer heat but
this thing was / is stuck on there good. Is this normal? exactly how do I get
the processor off the heatsink? without damage. (it's really on there). next,
what is the best heatsink/fan to get as a replacement? I want it very good
and quiet. Mine currently plugs into the motherboard. to top it all off the
heatsink/ fan comp usa sold me would have never have fit in the same place as
the one thats in there now. Also I have seen heatsinks that say for P4 but
have this big copper plate screwed onto the back of it, with that copper
plate on there it wont fit, (sits to high for the retention clips) can a
person take the copper plate off and just use the aluminum portion?
Thanks for any help.

A P4 board should all use the same 4 mounting supports for the heat-sink.
Make sure youre mounting in the correct direction. As for processor removal,
use a straight edge razor blade,or thin chisel type tool, work the 4 sides
till you
start penetrating the processor to heat sink,if its really cooked on,try
heating
the oposit side of processor(heat sink),then keep working the 4 edges. Its
hard
to believe anyone sells a heatsink/fan for P4 that doesnt fit....Yes you
need the
heat jell, however i'd bet crisco in the white goop form would also work.

If you really aspire to do tech support - start in the sandbox! Maybe you
would be better trouble shooting sand castles and why they collapse! Crisco
indeed!

To the O/P. It is up to YOU to obtain the correct cooling fan/heat sink for
your computer if you intend on doing the work yourself. There are
dozens/hundreds out there. They are all different, with different
capabilities and specifications.

Maybe it is time to bring your computer to a repair center.

You are just plain dangerous.
Please don't try any of Andrew E's suggestions.

Have you checked the Gateway web site for replacement fans? Also check
electronics web sites for a replacement fan.
I would suggest you take it to a repair shop, but they would probably charge
as much as it would cost to purchase a new possibly even faster replacement
CPU. Do a Google search for removing stuck heat sinks from a CPU.
Here are a few to strat you off with.

The older P4's came in two different configurations. 423 and 478 (new) pins
they use different heatsink/retention methods. Maybe you got the wrong one.
I have a P4 1700 with the older chips so maybe your P4 1800 is also that
configuration.
