CPU 100% Why

Peter

Hi All,

I am getting very fed up with having to reboot my machine
constantly ( WinXP Pro ). The problem being it is
extremely sloooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I check the Task
manager with only AOL running and it showed up as using
100% CPU utilization...surely this cant be right?

Any application that I attempt to open either office or
independant apps they take ages to respond, eventually
opening slow.

I have attempted to get rid of all *.TMP files the swap
file is at it's maximum and I regularly clear out any
files in Internet explorer.

Please can someone advise me, as this is getting to be a
choar rather than pleasure.

Cheers.

Take a look on your processes tab in your taskmanager and
you'll see a process that's taking 100 in your cpu collum.
End this process (or set priority to low).

Thanks Vasco,

The SVCHOST.EXE process was hogging around 97% of the CPU
usage unfortunately when i ended the process the machine
produced and error SYSTEM SHUTDOWN.

Is there anything else I can do...why would it have
shutdown like so?

Peter, what I don't see here is the answer to: What does a scan with a
current antivirus program (meaning a version not earlier than 2002 and
using updated virus definitions) show? Also, have you scanned for
spyware?

Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also want to
run CWShredder and HijackThis from http://aumha.org/freeware.htm.
Although CWShredder is no longer being updated, it will still clean
older variants of the CoolWebSearch malware. Please read the
instructions carefully. Also, make sure you've visited Windows Update
and applied all security patches. Do not install driver updates from
Windows Update. Make sure you are running a firewall.

The process svchost is legitimate, but many viruses can infect it. If
you need more help, please do post back with information as to whether
your computer is virus and spyware-free, processor speed, and amount of
RAM.
