counting ticked check boxes

how can I count the number of ticked checkboxes in a line. can anyone tell me
a formular. We sent out a survey with tick boxes and I am trying to collect
the return data on a spreadsheet. For example there is a Yes check box and a
No checkbox on the same line is there someway of counting only those that are
ticked?
