Counting Letters

Hello,
I am having trouble counting a list of initials. What I have is a
list of inspector's initials and I want to count how many times they
inspected. I can't figure out how to make excel count anything but
numbers. Here's a shortened version of my list
LD
LD
LD
RS
RS
AG
AG
RS
AG

It goes on for about 3,500. If anyone can help me, that'd be great!

Use the countif function

Put all of your inspectors Id in a list say H1:H10, then in I1 add

=COUNTIF($A:$A,H1)

and copy down.
